On Saturday, two flares landed near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea, raising serious questions concerning security in one of the world’s most closely guarded areas. Israeli police and Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency) announced that the Prime Minister and his family were not at home during the event. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. The incident has, however, been termed a “serious incident and dangerous escalation”.
What Happened?
Flares are thought to have landed in the courtyard outside Netanyahu’s residence, an area already highly secured. Barely a month since this residence was under attack from an Iran-backed Hezbollah drone attack, this is the second in such attacks. The earlier attack, according to Netanyahu, was a direct assassination attempt on him and his wife.
President Isaac Herzog has condemned this latest incident and sought swift intervention to identify and penalize the assassin. He showed his anxiety over the soaring violence in Israel and appealed for calm amid high tensions.
The situation is as grave as it can go, but little to no one knows who was behind flaring, be it another attempt by Hezbollah or might it be a game more complex here?

The attack falls in line with increased tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which have heightened since late September. Bombing campaigns by Israel on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon have been on the increase, and ground troops have also been deployed for more aggressive measures.
However, Hezbollah does not appear to be fearful, at least in terms of responding in retaliation. Just hours before the flare occurred a rocket had landed on a prayer house in Haifa. Two were injured. But Hezbollah also claimed responsibility for several other rocket attacks, said to include military sites as well as a northern Israel naval base.
It’s a tight time in Israel, especially for its leaders. Caesarea is not just a town down south of Haifa. It’s a place where there has always been a perception of comfort and security, yet threats become all too real even there.

My Thoughts on the Incident
Honestly, it is a mystifying situation. Israel counts on having Mossad, the most advanced and feared intelligence agency in the world. How would any human manage to even get close to the Prime Minister’s house? And now, let’s not forget the Secret Service of Israel. Aren’t they, too, supposed to be among the very best? Netanyahu is no ordinary minister but the Prime Minister of Israel, a country constantly under the shadow of threats from various militant groups.
I don’t like the fact that flares or even drones can reach his residence. In this geopolitical climate, Netanyahu’s security should be tighter than ever. With so many organizations wanting him gone, how could there be lapses like this?
Now it gets all more interesting and speculative. Is this an inside job? What if Israel itself planned the incident? Not the first time in geopolitics for a threat to be an excuse to act against enemies. Maybe, just maybe, this attack just gives reason for further aggression against Hezbollah or some other entity. Maybe I am entirely wrong, but face it, geopolitics is not exactly simplistic, my friend. Anything can happen.
What Needs to Happen?

Israel cannot afford such breaches, especially now. Whether it’s upgrading intelligence or placing additional guards, the security around Netanyahu needs a serious review.

The public deserves to know who is behind these incidents. Without clarity, speculation (like my own) will continue to spread.
